Characteristics

Plants short and spreading to an erect, bamboo-like tussock, 2-3 m high; rhizomatous. Culms stout and branched, hollow. Leaf sheaths persistent, wrapped around culm. Male inflorescences large, branched with 21-500 small spikelets. Female spikelets solitary at tip of each culm, fat and spindle-shaped with acute apex, up to 30 mm long. Flowering time Sept.-May.
