Characteristics

Perennial tree or shrub, 1.0-2.5 m high; often armed with slender, straight spines. Leaves opposite, ovate to elliptic, thinly hairy and ciliate at midrib on both sides, base rounded, apex acute, margins entire; petioles up to 3 mm long, stipules triangular, hairy. Flowers small, green, 1 or 2 in leaf axils. Corolla 4-or 5-lobed, ± 4 mm long, constricted below mouth. Stamens 4 or 5, arising in corolla mouth; filaments usually shorter than anthers. Ovary: style slender, shortly exceeding corolla tube, pollen presenter ± as wide as long or wider, 2(3)-lobed. Flowering time June-Dec. Fruit a drupe, ovoid, 13 mm long, blackish.
