Characteristics

Small tree. Leaves ovate-oblong to elliptic-oblong, entire, 7-17 by 3-6 cm, shining and deep-brown when dry, acute to acuminate (acumen up to 2 cm long), base cuneate of rarely rounded; nerves 7-11 pairs, slightly elevated on both surfaces, sometimes obscure on the upper surface; petiole thick, 0.5-1 cm. Stipules 1.5-2.5 cm long. Inflorescences and flowers sessile, 1-4-flowered; bracts and bracteoles crowded together, decussate, ovate, amplexicaulous and embracing the lower part of the flower. Flowers 7-8 mm long, green, petals, stamens, and style exserted. Calyx lobes 5 or 6, lanceolate, 2.5-3.5 mm long, with a tuft of hairs at the tip, shortly brownish hairy within. Petals sagittate, 4.5 mm long, fimbriate, conduplicate, base acute and involute, unguiculate. Disk cup-shaped, halfway divided into deltoid lobes. Stamens filiform, 8-10 mm; anthers ovoid, slightly apiculate. Ovary 1-celled, ovules 10-12, pendulous, attached on the axis; style filiform, 10 mm; stigmas capitate. Fruits oblong-ellipsoid, 12 by 7 mm, 1-celled, 1-seeded, the floral parts persistent. Seeds obovoid, obtuse at both ends, areolate, 9 by 4.5 mm; embryo straight.
