Tufted perennial. Leaves grass-like, 5–10 cm longer than culms, 0.5–1 mm wide. Culms filiform, 15–50 cm high; inflorescence slender, 4–7 cm long. Glumes narrowly lanceolate, acute, keeled, 4–5 mm long; lowermost glume with a leaf-like tip up to 10 cm long; lower glumes separated on axis; mid glumes gradually closer; upper glumes overlapping. Lowermost 20–30 flowers female; uppermost 5–10 flowers male. Utricle slender, ± equalling glume; hooked bristle 4 (–5) mm long.
