Characteristics

Rhizoma lignosum, perenne. Culmi 3-6 dm., approximate trigoni. Folia elongata, plana, in marginibus minute scabra; vaginae aphyllae fuseae. Inflorescentia 2-3 dm. longa, lanceolata, laxa. Spicae terminates saepius spiculis masculis, multifloris, 5-10 mm. longis instructae. Spiculae androgynae longae 8 mm., 3-7-florae, flore imo foemineo, caeteris masculis. Spiculae 1-florae foemineae haud raro obviae sunt, ideoque spicae specie androgynae basi 2 spiculis foemineis instructae videntur. Gluma foeminea longa 3 mm., stramineo-fusca, nervis circiter 13 viridibus validis striata, apice minute ciliato-pubescens, marginibus involutis usque ad basin liberis, rhachillae dilatatae arcte adpressis, fructus tempore ventricosa. Rachilla infra florem imum masculum fere linearis, 2 processibus ovatis aut lanceolatis serratis utrinque excurrentibus. Nux longa 3 mm., trigona, obtusa, stylobasi lineari.

Subtending bracts: lowest with sheath ± 30 mm long. Spikelet bracts (glumes): female ovate, 3-4 x 1.6 mm, scabrid awn up to 2.5 mm long. Perigynium shortly stalked, elliptic, ± 4.5 x 1.6 mm (including ± 1 mm long rostrum), 3-angled, nervose, golden-brown. Flowering time Aug., Nov.-Feb., Apr. Nutlet elliptic, ± 2.8 x 1.5 mm, 3-angled, crowned by semi-persistent style base.
