Characteristics

Culmi usque 60 cm. alti, laeves, subvalidi, foliati. Folia inflorescentiam subaequantia, 5-8 mm. lata, sicca marginibus revoluta, glaucescenti-viridia, coriacea. Spicae 4-5 approximatae sed infima distans, superiores 1-2 masculae, subclavato-cylindricae, ceterae 3-4 femineae, cylindricae, crassae, 2.5-4.5 cm. longae, inferiores exserte pedunculatae, superiores plerumque incluse pedunculatae. Bracteae foliaceae, inferiores inflorescentiam superantes, longi-vaginantes, superiores inflorescentiam aequantes, breviter vaginantes. Squamae femineae late ovatae, apice saepe bilobae, rufae, carinatae, mucronatae. Utriculi squamis longiores, 5-6 mm. longi, ellipsoidei vel oblongo-ellipsoidei, demum horizontaliter divaricati, sub-coriacei, subinflati, fulvi, rufo-maculati, glabri, indistincte tenuiter nervosi, in rostrum modice longum rectum subteres marginibus laeve ore bidentatum abrupte contracti. Nux laxe inclusa, obovata, trigona, breviter stipitata, longe rostrata. Stigmata 3.

Perennial herb, tufted, 0.3-0.9 m high. Leaf blades up to 220 x 6-10 mm, flat or plicate, upper surface glabrous, lower surface papillate. Culm nodose, 3-angled, 1.5-2.0 mm in diam. Inflorescence a raceme of spikes, 65-110 mm long. Bracts 1 at each node, leaf-like. Spikes 4-6, erect or suberect, the largest 20-40 x 9-11 mm, upper 1 or 2 male, lower 3-5 female. Female bracts (glumes) shorter and narrower than perigynium, broadly ovate, 3.5-5.0 x 1.5-2.5 mm, keel excurrent into 0.5-1.0 mm long, scabrid awn. Perigynium stalked, 4-6 x 1.2-2.5 mm, elliptic or rotund in cross section, much inflated (‘hump-backed’), green or reddish, cartilaginous, glabrous, nervose. Flowering time Nov.-Feb. Nutlet obovate, 2.2-2.8 x 1.2-1.8 mm, 3-angled, dark brown with lighter angles, surface minutely papillose.
