Perennial herb, 0.3-1.0 m high. Leaves narrowly ovate-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, glabrous, margins faintly scabrid, apex acute; stipular sheath cup-shaped, with 3-5 bristles, up to 2.5 mm long. Flowers: bisexual or female, 1 or in groups of few, lateral or terminal branches; fruiting pedicels up to 20 mm long. Calyx 4-6-lobed, often unequal in size. Corolla 4-6-lobed, greenish to black. Ovary 1.5-2.0 mm long. Flowering time July-Sept. Fruit green to dark brown, ± 4 x 1.5 mm, obovate to cylindrical, often ± ribbed; 1-seeded.
Foetid, lax, straggling perennial to 90 cm. Leaves lanceolate, soft, stipular sheath with several bristles. Flowers few on mostly lateral branchlets, greenish.
