Characteristics

Solitary, erect palms. Trunk moderate, smooth, with annular leaf scars. Leaves strongly arching, paripinnate; leaf sheaths tubular, forming a crownshaft. Pinnae reduplicate, linear, in a single plane, clustered basally on rachis, apically truncate and praemorse, green on both surfaces; midrib prominent; ramenta sparse. Inflorescence infrafoliar, a divaricate panicle branched to 4 orders; peduncle short; prophyll tubular; peduncular bract tubular; rachis elongate; first order branches subtended by small ridged bract. Flowers spirally arranged, with triads in proximal portion of rachilla, staminate flowers in distal portion. Staminate flowers symmetric in bud; stamens 30–40; anthers dorsifixed; filaments erect; pistillode as long as stamens, bottle-shaped. Pistillate flowers ovoid. Fruit ovoid to globose, red; stigmatic remains apical; epicarp smooth; mesocarp fleshy, fibrous toward endocarp; endocarp thin, glassy. Seed terete in cross section; endosperm homogeneous; embryo basal. Eophyll bifid.
