Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 7 m; young branchlets, smooth, puberulous or glabrous, dark brown; lenticels few, inconspicuous. Leaves chartaceous, nearly glabrous, very sparsely to moderately pellucid-punctate, ovate-oblong or elliptic, acuminate; lamina mostly 7–10 cm long, 2.5–3.5 cm wide, entire; base cuneate or shortly decurrent; secondary veins 4–6 (occasionally 7) pairs; tertiary veins approximately transverse; petiole glabrescent, 5–10 mm long; stipules deltoid, 0.4 mm long, caducous. Flowers solitary or in fascicles of 2–5; bracts puberulous or glabrous; pedicels glabrous, 2–3 mm long. Calyx nearly glabrous; lobes broadly ovate, concave, 2–2.2 mm long. Stamens 10; filaments alternately 0.4 and 0.6 mm long, pubescent towards base; staminodes 0.3 mm long, villous. Ovary ovoid, mostly glabrous, pilose towards very short style; stigma subglobose. Capsule ellipsoidal or obovoid, dehiscent, 3-valved, red. Seeds c. 14 or fewer, obovoid, angular; aril membranous, nearly enveloping each seed, red; testa yellow-brown.
