Characteristics

Shrub or small tree up to 13 m. tall; young stem sparsely appressed-pubescent.. Leaves petiolate; petiole 3–8 mm. long, indumentum as on stem; blade narrowly to broadly elliptic, more rarely subovate or subobovate, rarely oblong, up to 14 × 5.5 cm., cuneate or rounded to a cuneate base, tapering or subacuminate to rounded above, extreme apex acute or obtuse, margin entire or sharply to bluntly serrate especially above the middle, glabrous above, blade obscurely and midrib longly appressed-pubescent or blade occasionally and midrib rarely glabrous beneath.. Flowers 1–4 (–6) per inflorescence; pedicels up to 4 mm. long, articulate just above the middle, appressed-pubescent.. Calyx 5-or 4-partite; tube 1.5 mm. long; lobes 3 mm. long, sublanceolate, apex acute, longly and densely appressed-pubescent externally, glabrous or sparsely pubescent within.. Petals 5 or 4, shortly laciniate, glabrous.. Stamens 20 or 16 (–17), inserted on outer margin of a very slightly thickened annular disc.. Ovary superior, drying black, 3 (–4)-celled, glabrous or with long sparse usually yellow hairs especially above; style up to 4 mm. long, persistent.. Capsule (drying) black, broader above than below, 5–6 mm. long, smooth and glabrous or with a few hairs above.. Fig. 4/6.
