Characteristics

Tree or shrub up to 18 m. tall; young stem very shortly and rather sparsely appressed-hirsute, glabrate within one year.. Leaves petiolate; petiole up to 6 mm. long, sparsely hirtellous; blade elliptic to almost narrowly (oblong-) elliptic, up to 7.8 × 3.2 cm. or 6.7 × 3.5 cm., cuneate or subacuminate to an acute base, acuminate or shortly acuminate to an obtuse apex, margin entire to widely serrate, especially above the middle, glabrous or very sparsely pubescent below, smooth and shining above, papery to chartaceous.. Flowers 1–3; pedicels up to 1.5 mm. long, shortly hirsute, articulate apically.. Calyx 5–6-partite; tube 1.5 mm.; lobes 3 mm. long, narrowly triangular, ± shortly white-hirsute externally, ± obscurely puberulous within.. Stamens 20–24; disc c. 0.5 mm. long.. Ovary densely white-hirsute; style persistent, usually sparsely pubescent (? glabrescent).. Fruit almost spherical, c. 5 mm. long, densely velvety; indumentum interspersed with ± numerous longer hairs above.
