Characteristics

Leaf-lamina 4–8 x 1·5–3 cm., elliptic to rarely sub-obovate, discolorous, leathery; apex obtuse and slightly acuminate; margins sparsely and inconspicuously serrate from below the middle towards the apex; base subcuneate, cuneate or attenuate into the petiole; superior surface green, shining and glabrous (except on the midrib and near the margins which are sparsely pubescent), reticulation dense and ± conspicuous; inferior surface green-yellowish, mat, sparsely appressed-pubescent (more densely so on midrib), midrib prominent, reticulation close and moderately prominent; petiole 3–5 mm. long, pubescent; stipules up to 4 mm. long, ovate, obtuse or rounded at the apex and truncate at the base, appressed-pubescent abaxially and puberulous adaxially.

Flowers 4-merous; pedicels 2 mm. long, hirsute-pubescent, articulate near the apex; bracteoles 1 mm. long, conchiform, rounded at the apex, truncate at the base, puberulous abaxially and glabrous adaxially (pubescent at the base).
Ovary 1–1·5 mm. long, subovoid, 3-locular, densely hirsute, slightly semi-inferior; style up to 1·5 mm. long, thick, white, glabrous, persistent, with 3 stigmatic surfaces.
Calyx appressed-pubescent outside and glabrous inside; calyx-tube c. 1·5 mm. long; calyx-lobes 3 mm. long, ± ovate, acute at the apex.
Petals 8 mm. long, spathulate, laciniate above, glabrous, inserted on the margin of the disk outside the stamens.
Stamens 16–18, inserted on the margin of the disk; filaments 3 mm. long; anthers 1 mm. long, oblong-ellipsoid.
Tree 4·5 m. high; branches terete, smooth, puberulous when young, glabrous with age; bark dark grey.
Disk hypogynous, shallowly cupuliform and flat at the bottom, weakly developed.
Inflorescences mostly 2-flowered.
