Characteristics

Tree (3)5-20(25) m high, evergreen; branches terete, shortly appressed-puberulous to glabrescent when young, glabrous with age; bark brown or grey, smooth with scattered raised lenticels. Leaves decussate (sometimes verticillate) on thick nodes; leaf-lamina (10.5)12-15 x (4)5-7.5 or 5-14(21) x 3-5(10) cm, elliptic-lanceolate, narrowly to broadly elliptic or oblong or rarely ovate or obovate, glabrous, ± leathery; apex rounded to acuminate, obtuse or ± acute; margins entire, shallowly sinuate to bluntly and shallowly remotely serrate usually above the middle towards the apex; base rounded to cuneate, ± acute at its extremity; petiole (6)8-15(17) mm long, thick, pubescent when young and glabrous with age; stipules 2-4 mm long, ± triangular, thick, slightly puberulous to glabrous, soon caducous. Inflorescences ± dense and congested fascicles. Flowers 4-5-or 5-6-merous; pedicels 1.5-4 mm long, glabrous, articulate at or slightly above the middle; bracteoles minute, puberulous to glabrous, or absent. Calyx glabrous; calyx-tube 2-4 mm long, elongate-campanulate; calyx-lobes 0.5-1.5 mm long, semi-circular to ± deltate, rounded or obtuse (rarely acute) and usually puberulous at the apex, suberect. Petals linear-spathulate, laciniate at the apex, white, glabrous, inserted outside at the base of the disk. Disk c. 1 mm high, entire to ± deeply lobed. Stamens 8-10(12) or (8)10-12 inserted along and outside below the margin of the tubulous-campanulate ± lobed disk; filaments 4.5-7 mm long (the oppositipetalous longer than the alternipetalous); anthers 0.7-1.1 mm long, ± ellipsoid. Ovary 1-1.5 mm long, obovoid to ovoid, 2(3)-locular, glabrous, sparsely pubescent above the middle to regularly pubescent or densely white-hirsute mainly above the middle, superior or semi-inferior; style 3-6 mm long, glabrous, slightly 2(3)-lobed. Capsule up to 7 mm long, ellipsoid, ± spherical to obovoid, glabrous or puberulous mainly above the middle.
