Characteristics

Small shrub 2-3(5) m high; branches terete, grey or brownish, ± smooth, hairy when young, glabrous with age. Leaf-lamina 3-7.5(10) x 2-4.5 cm, ± elliptic or obovate, leathery; apex rounded, truncate, obtuse or shortly obtuse-acuminate; margins entire to sparsely serrate (2, 3 or more teeth) towards the apex and somewhat revolute; base ± cuneate to rounded; midrib straight, prominent below, the reticulation conspicuous on both surfaces; superior surface ± glossy, glabrous; inferior surface mat, sparsely appressed-pubescent to glabrate; petiole 3-6(8) mm long, hairy to glabrescent; stipules 2.5-6 mm long, ovate to ovate-triangular, obtuse to acute at the apex, subcordate-truncate at the base, ± pubescent to glabrous (with hairy margins towards the apex) outside, soon caducous. Inflorescences 1-3-flowered, ± lax. Flowers 5-merous; pedicels 1.5-4 mm long, sparsely hairy, articulate near the apex; bracteoles c. 2 mm long, conchiform, ± rounded at the apex, truncate at the base, slightly pubescent to glabrous (except along the margins) abaxially and glabrous adaxially. Calyx green, sericeous outside and glabrous inside; calyx-tube 2 mm long; calyx-lobes 4-5 mm long, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate. Petals 6-7 mm long, spathulate, laciniate above, white to yellow, glabrous. Stamens 15-20; filaments 4-5 mm long; anthers 1.5 mm long, ellipsoid. Ovary up to 2 mm long, ovoid to sub-spherical, 3-4-locular, glabrous or slightly and sparsely hairy to hirsute at the apex; style 5 mm long, glabrous to pubescent near the base and puperulous towards the apex, persistent, sometimes lobulate, with 3-4 stigmatic surfaces 0.5 mm long at the apex. Fruit c. 5 mm long, ovoid to spherical, glabrous or slightly and sparsely hairy at the apex.
