Cultivation

Although technically not a cultivar, the open-pollinated seedlings sold under this name are widely distributed. The original Chinese trees were PI 36666, a Tiger Paw-type imported by Frank Meyer (the same importation that yielded Bartlett and Connecticut Yankee). The original trees were planted in 1917 by J. Henry Lienhard in Beach City, Ohio, and they fruited in 1921. Lienhard's son-in-law, J. Lester Hawk, then became the owner, and started Hawk & Son Nursery. He reported that they had 2511 seedling Chinese trees in 1943. Some of these were purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Bert Harter in 1946. In 1961, Oliver Diller noted that the nuts produced by these trees were excellent. From these trees, Boyd's Nursery produced and named the "Hart Chestnut," and subsequently the Sweet Hart.
