Characteristics

Dioecious shrubs or trees with a simple indumentum. Leaves alternate, petiolate, stipulate, simple, entire, penninerved, nerves usually brochidodromous. Stipules soon falling, leaving conspicuous subannular scars. Inflorescences terminal, racemose, strobiliform when young. Bracts broad, soon caducous. Male flowers long-pedicellate; pedicels capillary, articulate near the base; calyx closed in bud, later splitting into 2–3(–4) unequal valvate lobes; petals 4–5, free, imbricate; disc-glands 4–5(–6), free, alternate with the petals, fleshy; stamens 15–30, erect in bud, inserted on a convex or columnar receptacle, anthers basifixed, connective broad, thick, the cells soleiform, longitudinally dehiscent; pistillode 0. Female flowers long-pedicellate; pedicels stout, articulate near the base; sepals and petals (4–)5, free, imbricate; disc hypogynous, cupuliform, fleshy; ovary 3–5-locular, with 1 ovule per locule; styles 3–5, connate at the base, 2–3-fid. Fruit 3–5-lobed, dehiscing into 3–5 bivalved cocci; pericarp thin, crustaceous; endocarp thick, woody; columella large, persistent. Seeds ecarunculate.
