Characteristics

Erect or scrambling herb with rather few to many long slender branches and with a horizontal, branched rootstock, from 0.6–2 m. and probably more in height.. Stem and branches wiry, ridged, glabrous or thinly furnished with short multicellular hairs.. Leaves ovate or broadly to narrowly lanceolate-ovate, ± long-acuminate; lamina of the main stem-leaves 5–13 × 2.25–5 cm., shortly cuneate to subtruncate at the base and tapering into the ± 1.5–2.5 cm. petiole; upper and branch leaves smaller, somewhat narrower, more shortly petiolate.. Inflorescences axillary and terminal, of simple or branched elongate thyrses, the upper forming a broad spreading panicle up to ± 25 × 26 cm., the slender axes subglabrous or thinly furnished with yellowish multicellular hairs; lateral cymose clusters of flowers few-flowered, lax with branches up to ± 2 mm. long, to rather dense and subsessile, rather distant to subapproximate, ± 4–8 mm. in diameter.. Bracts and bracteoles deltoid-ovate, acuminate, 2–2.5 mm., hyaline with a pale or brownish midrib, glabrous or ± furnished with multicellular hairs.. Perianth-segments oblong-elliptic, 2–3 mm., silvery-hyaline with a slightly denser, white, narrow central vitta along the single minutely percurrent midrib, and occasionally with 2–5 very faint, short lateral nerves at the base.. Free portion of the (? always) magenta filaments subequalling the sheath, with no intermediate teeth.. Stigmas 2–3, recurved, subequalling the ± 0.75 mm. style.. Ovary (3–)5–6(–8)-ovulate.. Capsule ovoid, included or slightly exserted, 2–2.25 mm.. Seeds ± 1 mm., black, compressed, shining, furnished with punctate grooves which become shorter and narrower and ± concentric towards the outer edge.
