Climbing or trailing perennial to 1 m, minutely pubescent; stipules lanceolate, 2–4 mm, striate; lfls oblong to elliptic or ovate, 3–6 cm; fls 1–4 in a short-peduncled raceme, violet, 2–3 cm; bractlets ovate, striate, 8–12 mm, much surpassing the cal-tube; cal-lobes linear, 6–12 mm; fr flat, 7–12 cm × 4 mm, the persistent style 2–2.5 cm; 2n=18. Dry sandy woods and barrens; s. N.J. to Fla., w. to Ky., Ark., and Tex. (Bradburya v.)
