Characteristics

Terrestrial herbs with tuberous roots. Stems unbranched, leafy. Leaves usually narrow, scattered along the stem. Inflorescence terminal, up to 20-flowered. Flowers resupinate, white, cream-coloured or green. Sepals free, the laterals spreading or reflexed. Petals free, simple or with a short tooth at the base in front. Lip united to column at base, calcarate, 3-lobed; side lobes entire or pectinately toothed; spur cylindrical. Column erect, anther-loculi adjacent, parallel, canals slender, curved upwards, auricles small, entire; pollinaria 2, each with sectile pollinium, caudicle and small naked viscidium; stigmatic processes distinct, 2-lobed above the base, the lower lobe receptive, porrect, clavate or capitate, the upper lobe sterile, projecting upwards in front of the anther, often slender and horn-like, rostellum 3-lobed, the side lobes porrect or upcurved, the middle lobe erect between the loculi, narrowly triangular, acute or obtuse, much shorter than the anther.
