Characteristics

Climber with tuberous rootstock. Leaves simple; blade ± pinnately lobed, subsessile. Tendrils simple. Flowers medium-sized, yellow or cream, green-veined, dioecious. Male flowers solitary or paired; receptacle-tube cylindrical below, expanded above; lobes small; corolla-lobes 5, united below; stamens 3, all 2-thecous; filaments inserted on lower part of tube, free; connectives rather narrow; thecae triplicate. Female flowers solitary; ovary smooth, hairy; ovules many, horizontal. Fruit ellipsoid, attenuate at each end, baccate, red. Seeds rather small, pyriform in outline, compressed with depressed disk, black; testa warted.
