Characteristics

Dioicous, stem 3-6 mm long, 80-100 µ in diameter, erect, simple or almost so, slender, wiry, rhizoids near the base only and with long, erect, slender sterile branches from tire base, on which branches leaves are some-times reduced to two segments of three or four cells each. Leaves distant, small, 0.25 mm long, shortly attached, spreading, conduplicate, keeled, with entire triangular lobes, bilobed to about 1/2. Amphigastria lacking, marginal cells 10-14 x 12-14 µ, interior cells of the same size, thin walled, no trigones. Female inflorescence terminal, perianth ovoid, shortly pointed, with apical lobes inflexed, entire. Female bracts much enlarged, subequally bifid, strongly conduplicate, the inner two usually slightly toothed. Androecium terminal, bracts much larger than the leaves, usually red, loosely imbricate, bifid, monandrous.
