Characteristics

Perennial herb developing a stout woody stock, stems many from the crown, up to 150-300 mm tall, simple to loosely virgately branched, very weakly ridged, the lines running from the leaf bases and the base of the midrib, minutely puberulous, the hairs less than 0.1 mm long, leafy throughout, brachyblasts wanting. Leaves opposite, bases connate, largest c. 12-20 x 1-3 mm, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, acute to mucronate, margins strongly to weakly revolute, entire or with 1 or 2 pairs of small callose teeth, very minutely scabridulous, lower surface gland-dotted as well. Flowers in terminal racemes or very loose panicles. Bracts (lowermost) c. 2-5 x 1-1.2 mm, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, otherwise as leaves. Pedicels (lowermost) c. 8-14 mm long. Calyx bilabiate, tube 1-1.5 mm long, posticous lobes 2-3.2 x 0.4-1 mm, anticous ones a little broader, glandular-puberulous together with much coarser glandular hairs up to 0.3-1 mm long. Corolla tube 5-8 x 3-4 mm in throat, broadly funnel-shaped, limb nearly regular, 9-12 mm across, posticous lobes 3-3.5 x 2.2-3.2 mm, anticous lobe 3.2-4.5 x 2.5-4 mm, all lobes broadly elliptic, mauve, tube yellow/orange, glandular-puberulous outside, glistening glands as well, 5 longitudinal bands of clavate hairs inside. Stamens 4, all exserted, anthers 0.8-1.1 mm long, posticous filaments 1.6-2 mm long, anticous filaments 2.5-3.7 mm. Stigma 1.6-2 mm long, exserted. Style 4.8-6 mm long. Ovary 1.3-1.6 x 0.8-1.1 mm, a few glistening glands on sutures. Capsules c. 3.5-4 x 2.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.7 x 0.3 mm, blue-grey.
