Characteristics

Dwarf twiggy shrublet up to c. 350 mm tall, but often heavily browsed and regenerating shoots initially subsimple, stout woody caudex up to c. 20 mm in diam., branches erect or decumbent, terete or very weakly longitudinally ridged, minutely glandular-puberulous, hairs up to c. 0.1 mm long, leafy at least on upper parts, brachyblasts present. Leaves opposite, largest primary ones c. 10-30(40) x 1-3(4.5) mm, linear to narrowly elliptic, apex obtuse, base tapering to a petiolar part then abruptly expanded and clasping, not or slightly connate, sometimes decurrent in scarcely perceptible ridges, margins usually entire, rarely with 1-6 pairs of tiny teeth, strongly to weakly revolute, both surfaces glandular-puberulous. Flowers solitary in axils of leaves forming leafy racemes, sometimes overtopped or interrupted by sterile growth. Pedicels (lowermost) (8-)10-25 mm long. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 1-1.8 mm long, posticous lobes 2.4-4.5 x 0.7-1.2 mm, anticous lobes slightly broader, minutely glandular-puberulous with scattered longer hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm. Corolla tube 5-8 x 3-5 mm in throat, broadly funnel-shaped, limb nearly regular, posticous lobes 2.6-7 x 2.2-5.2 mm, anticous lobe 3.5-6.5 x 2.8-5 mm, all suborbicular, usually shades of mauve, rarely white, throat yellow/orange, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs c. 0.1-0.2 mm long, well-bearded inside with 5 longitudinal bands of clavate hairs. Stamens 4, all exserted, posticous filaments 2-3.8 mm long, usually bearded, anticous filaments 4-5 mm long. Stigma 2-5 mm long, exserted. Style 3.5-7 mm long. Ovary 1.4-1.8 x 1-1.3 mm, few glistening glands on sutures. Capsules 4.5-7 x 2.5-3 mm. Seeds (few seen) c. 0.6 x 0.4 mm, amber-coloured, but young.
