Characteristics

Perennial herb, initially with a woody taproot, eventually developing a small woody caudex, stems few to several from the crown, erect or decumbent, sometimes straggling, 100-450 mm long, well-branched, glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long, glistening glands as well particularly on upper parts, leafy. Leaves opposite, bases connate, largest ones 12-30 x 4-15 mm, smaller upwards and passing into bracts, elliptic, apex acute or subacute, base of lower leaves narrowed to a short petiolar part, upper ones sessile, broad-based, half-clasping, margins with c. 2-10 pairs of small teeth, both surfaces glandular-puberulous, hairs up to c. 0.15 mm long, many glistening glands as well. Flowers in long racemes, often further arranged in panicles. Bracts (lowermost) c. 3.5-15 x 2-4 mm, leaflike, the smaller ones sometimes entire. Pedicels (lowermost) c. 5-25 mm long, filiform. Calyx regular, tube 1-1.6 mm long, lobes (6-)8(-9), 1.4-3.8 x 0.5-1 mm, lanceolate, glandular-puberulous, tube in particular with coarse glandular hairs as well c. 0.15-0.4 mm long, many glistening glands also present. Corolla tube 4-7.5 x 3-6 mm in throat, broadly funnel-shaped, limb almost regular, 8-14 mm across, posticous lobes 3-5 x 3-4 mm, anticous lobe 3.2-5 x 3-4 mm, all oblong-orbicular, mauve-pink, tube yellow or orange, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to c. 0.2 mm long, glistening glands as well, clavate hairs inside, more or less in 5 longitudinal bands around throat. Stamens 4, all exserted, anthers 1-1.7 mm long, posticous filaments 1-2.5 mm long, anticous filaments 2.5-4 mm long. Stigma 1.2-2.5 mm long, exserted. Style 2.5-6 mm long, clad in glistening glands, glandular hairs up to 0.15 mm long sometimes present as well. Ovary 1.4-1.8 x 1-1.25 mm, glistening glands all over. Capsules 3-6 x 2-4 mm, glistening glands persistent. Seeds 0.4-0.75 x 0.25-0.5 mm, amber-coloured. It can possibly be found in flower in any month, but most records are in January.
