Characteristics

Perennial herb but flowering when young and then looking like an annual, taproot eventually thick and woody, up to 10 mm diam. at crown, stem soon branching from the base and above, branches erect or decumbent, sometimes sprawling, c. 50-450(-600) mm long, pubescent with glandular hairs up to 0.2-0.6 mm long on upper parts, sometimes mixed with acute hairs, mainly acute hairs on lower part of stem, c. 0.3-0.7 mm long, leafy. Leaves opposite, largest c. 10-40 x 5-15(-30)mm, ovate or elliptic tapering to a short petiolar part, apex acute, margins with few to several pairs of small teeth, both surfaces pubescent, hairs up to 0.25 mm long, glistening glands as well. Flowers in racemes paniculately arranged, the lowermost flowers in the axils of the uppermost leaves. Bracts (lowermost, and often a leaf with an axillary bud) c. 6-18 x 1.5-7 mm, rapidly smaller upwards and then often entire. Pedicels (lowermost) c. 5-28 mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.7-1.5 mm long, lobes 2.8-6 x 0.7-1 mm, glandular-pubescent, the coarser hairs 0.5-1.2 mm long, glistening glands also present. Corolla tube 6-9 x 4-6 mm in throat, broadly funnel-shaped, limb almost regular, 9-14 mm across, posticous lobes 3.3-4.5 x 3-4.8 mm, anticous lobe 3.3-6 x 3.3-5 mm, all oblong-orbicular, shades of mauve, tube yellow or orange, glandular puberulous outside, glistening glands as well, clavate hairs inside in 5 longitudinal bands. Stamens 4, all exserted, anthers 1-1.6 mm long, posticous filaments 1.5-3 mm long, anticous ones 3-4 mm. Stigma 1-2.4 mm, exserted. Style 4.8-7 mm long, occasionally with a few glistening glands. Ovary 1-1.8 x 0.8-1.1 mm, glistening glands on sutures and very rarely a few on lower part of style. Capsules c. 4.3-6.5 x 2.5-3 mm, glistening glands persistent. Seeds c. 0.5-0.8 x 0.3 mm, amber-coloured. Flowers can be found in any month.
