Characteristics

Herb, either annual or, presumably, a short-lived perennial, stems simple to loosely branched from the base and above, c. 15-450 mm long, up to c. 4 mm diam. at base, semi-erect or decumbent, often flexuous in upper part, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to c. 0.15-1.5 mm long, leafy. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, largest blades c. 4-33 x 3-25 mm, rhomboid to broadly ovate abruptly contracted into a petiolar part c. 3-11 mm long (proportion of blade to petiole c. 1-3:1), apex acute, margins with 3-6 pairs of coarse teeth or lobes themselves sometimes sparingly toothed (largest teeth c. 3-5 mm measured along the top edge), both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs as stems, scattered glistening glands as well. Flowers solitary in axils of upper leaves. Pedicels (longest) c. 6-23 mm. Calyx bilabiate, tube 0.7-1.2 mm long, posticous lobes 2-5 x 0.5-1 mm, anticous lobes a little broader, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-1.4 mm long. Corolla tube 6-11 x 2.2-3.5 mm in throat, funnel-shaped, limb nearly regular, 6-10 mm across (or smaller if flowers are selfing), posticous lobes 2-4 x 1.5-2.6 mm, anticous lobe 1.84 x 1.5-2.5 mm, all elliptic, white or pale pink or mauve, throat yellow, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.2-0.5 mm long, scattered glistening glands as well, glabrous within. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, filaments 1.7-3.2 mm long, posticous pair included, filaments 0.8-1.7 mm long, anthers 0.5-1.1 mm long. Stigma 1-2.5 mm long, usually exserted. Style 3.5-9 mm long. Ovary 1.1-1.7 x 0.7-1 mm, a few glistening glands on sutures and sometimes scattered up style. Capsules 2.5-5 x 2-5 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.8 x 0.3-0.4 mm, pallid. Plants may be found in flower and fruit in any month.
