Characteristics

Perennial herb, taproot eventually forming a woody stock, stems many from the crown, up to 150-450 mm tall, simple or subsimple to loosely virgately branched, weakly ridged, the lines running from the leaf-bases and the base of the midrib, glabrous to very minutely puberulous or scabridulous, leafy on the lower parts or right up to the inflorescence, without brachyblasts. Leaves opposite, bases connate, largest c. 10-25 x 1-2(-3) mm, linear or rarely narrowly elliptic, acute to mucronate, margins usually strongly revolute, rarely ± plane, entire or sometimes with a few callose teeth, indumentum as on stems. Flowers in terminal racemes or very loose panicles. Bracts sharply differentiated from the leaves, lowermost c. 2-2.5 x 1-1.4 mm, lanceolate, acute. Pedicels (lowermost) c. 6-10 mm long. Calyx bilabiate, tube 1-1.5 mm long, posticous lobes (1.8-)2.5-4.5 x 0.6-1 mm, anticous ones a little broader, glandular-puberulous together with much coarser glandular hairs up to 0.3-0.8 mm long. Corolla tube 9.2-12.5 x 2.7-3 mm in throat, funnel-shaped, limb almost regular, 7-12 mm across, posticous lobes 2.2-4.2 x 1.6-3.2 mm, anticous lobe 2.7-5 x 1.8-3 mm, all oblong-elliptic, mauve or pink to purple, tube yellow/orange, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long, glistening glands as well, 5 longitudinal bands of clavate hairs inside. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, filaments 1.8-2.5 mm, posticous pair in throat, filaments 0.8-1.6 mm long, anthers 0.7-1.2 mm long. Stigma 1-2.3 mm long, exserted. Style c. 8-11 mm long. Ovary 1.2-1.8 x 1 mm. Capsules c. 3.5-5 x 2-3 mm. Seeds 0.8-1 x 0.4 mm, violet-blue or grey-blue. Flowering records are scattered throughout the year.
