Characteristics

Sprawling perennial herb, rootstock woody, up to c. 10 mm diam., branches many from the crown, of indeterminate length, laxly branched, sometimes rooting at the nodes, softly villous with gland-tipped hairs up to 0.8-2 mm long, leafy. Leaves opposite, largest blades 6-21 x 8-24 mm, ovate abruptly contracted to a petiolar part c. 2-6 mm long, roughly 1/4 to 1/5 length of blade, apex acute, margins serrate to irregularly shallowly lobed and toothed, both surfaces pubescent to villous with glandular hairs up to 0.8-2 mm long, densely clad in glistening glands as well. Flowers solitary in axils of leaves. Pedicels (lowermost) c. 6-30 mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.5-1 mm long, lobes 3-4.7 x 0.4-0.7 mm, villous with glandular hairs up to 0.4-2 mm long, densely clad in glistening glands as well. Corolla tube 4.5-10 x 2.5-4.5 mm in throat, funnel-shaped, limb almost regular, 7-9.5 mm across, posticous lobes 2.5-3.5 x 1.8-3 mm, anticous lobe 2.6-4 x 1.8-3.4 mm, all oblong-elliptic to oblong-orbicular, white, occasionally faintly tinged mauve, tube yellow or orange, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.2-0.6 mm long, many glistening glands as well, inside well bearded all round with clavate hairs. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, filaments 2.5-3.5 mm long, posticous pair included, filaments 1.5-2.5 mm long, anthers 0.8-1.2 mm long. Stigma 0.7-1.3 mm long, exserted. Style 4-7 mm long. Ovary 1-1.4 x 0.75-1.2 mm long, ± wholly clad in glistening glands. Capsule 3.5-4 x 2.5-3 mm, glistening glands persistent. Seeds c. 0.4-0.7 x 0.3 mm, amber-coloured. Flowering mainly between December and March, though there is one record in July.
