Characteristics

Perennial herb eventually forming a small woody caudex, stems many from the base, c. 150-450 mm long, loosely to more closely branched, sprawling or decumbent and then rooting at the nodes, possibly sometimes erect, terete,-glandular-pubescent, hairs up to c. 0.1-0.25 mm long, brachyblasts present, closely leafy. Leaves opposite, bases connate forming a transverse ridge, largest primary leaves 6-30 x 1-5 mm, linear to narrowly elliptic, acute, margins often entire, rarely with up to 3 pairs of small callose teeth, plane to weakly revolute, glandular-puberulous as the stems. Flowers solitary in the axils of the uppermost leaves, the longest of these c. 3-15 x 0.7-3.5 mm, often becoming alternate, each terminal inflorescence 1-few-flowered, forming either racemes or narrow panicles. Pedicels (lowermost) 7-28 mm long. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 2-3.5 mm long, posticous lobes 3-10 x 0.5-1 mm, anticous lobes slightly broader, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.15-0.3 mm long, some glistening glands as well. Corolla tube 14-28 x 2-3 mm in throat, limb slightly bilabiate, 9-14 mm across, posticous lobes 3.2-6 x 2-4 mm, anticous lobe 3.2-6 x 2-4 mm, all broadly elliptic to oblong-elliptic, often mauve, sometimes white or tinged with pink, throat yellow, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs 0.15-0.3 mm long, inside well-bearded with clavate hairs in throat below the posticous lip. Stamens 4, anthers 1-1.5 mm long, anticous pair exserted, filaments 2-3 mm long, posticous pair included, filaments 1-2 mm long. Stigma 1.3-4 mm long, exserted. Style 12.5-25 mm long. Ovary 1.4-2 x 0.8-1 mm, glabrous. Capsules usually c. 5-9 x 2-2.5 mm, but an occasional tiny capsule present. Seeds c. 1 x 0.4 mm, pallid.
More
Perennial herb or dwarf shrub, up to 0.45 m high. Stems terete, much branched, pale green, subglabrous or glandular-puberulous. Leaves opposite; subsessile or sessile; blade linear to linear-spathulate, 8-26 x 1.6-6.0 mm, apex acute, obtusely narrowed at both ends, attenuate at times narrowing into a very short petiole, margins entire, rarely with small teeth. Flowers: solitary, axillary, in terminal racemes or narrow panicles; if principle leaves > 5 mm wide, then ovaries either glabrous or with only a few glistening glands on sutures; stamens 4, anticous pair exserted; corolla tube 14-28 mm long, throat yellow; limb somewhat bilabiate, 8-12 mm in diameter; lobes white or pinkish to mauve; Mar.-May.
Perennial herb, later with woody caudex, several parts shortly glandular-pubescent. Stems many, up to 450 mm long, sprawling to erect, leafy, with leaf tufts. Leaves narrow, acute, rarely with small teeth. Flowers single, axillary, in terminal racemes or narrow panicles. Calyx clearly bilabiate, tube up to 3.5 mm long.
