Characteristics

Perennial herb, virgately branched from base, eventually developing into a twiggy shrublet, stems up to c. 150-400 mm long, erect, decumbent or possibly sometimes prostrate, terete, glandular-puberulous, but these hairs masked by long (up to 2 mm) delicate, cobwebby-woolly, greyish-white hairs, leafy throughout. Leaves opposite, largest c. 5-22 x 2.5-13 mm, elliptic, acute to obtuse, base narrowed into a short petiolar part then abruptly expanded and connate, margins distinctly toothed with c. 4-10 pairs of teeth to subentire, slightly revolute, hairs as on stem, sometimes thinner on upper surface. Flowers solitary in axils of upper leaves, these sometimes alternate upwards, the lowermost c. 2-12 x 1.5-8 mm, eventually forming well-branched leafy panicles, simple terminal racemes if branching very lax. Pedicels (lowermost) 2-9 mm long. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 0.7-1 mm long, posticous lobes 2.4-4.2 x 0.6-1 mm, anticous lobes slightly broader, glandular-puberulous, but masked by long cobwebby-woolly hairs. Corolla tube 9-13 x 2-3 mm in throat, narrowly funnel-shaped, limb nearly regular, 8-10 mm across, posticous lobes 2.6-4.6 x 1.8-3 mm, anticous lobe 3-4.6 x 1.8-2.8 mm, all oblong elliptic, often white, sometimes pale pink or mauve, tube yellow or orange, ± cobwebby outside, hairs up to c. 0.5-0.6 mm long, glandular-puberulous as well, weakly bearded inside with clavate hairs on posticous side. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, filaments 1.4-2.2 mm long, posticous pair included, filaments 1-1.2 mm long, anthers 0.7-1 mm long. Stigma 1-2.5 mm long, exserted. Style 7-9.5 mm long. Ovary c. 1.2 x 0.8 mm, a few glistening glands on sutures. Capsules 2.5-3.5 x 2.5-3 mm. Seeds 0.8-1 x 0.4 mm, grey-blue. Found in flower in any month.
