Characteristics

Perennial herb with an irregularly-shaped caudex up to c. 30 mm in diam. or possibly larger, stems few to several from the crown, erect or decumbent, c. 150-600 mm long, simple to branched mainly in the upper half to form a corymbose panicle, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.15-0.25(-0.3) mm long, glistening glands as well, closely leafy. Leaves opposite, bases connate, largest ones c. 15-40 x 3.5-17 mm, smaller upwards and passing into bracts, oblong to elliptic, apex acute or subacute, base slightly narrowed or not, margins subentire or with up to 6 pairs of small teeth, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.3 mm long, densely covered in glistening glands as well. Flowers in long terminal racemes, sometimes branching into corymbose panicles. Bracts (lowermost) c. 2.5-14 x 2-4.5 mm, usually at least twice as long as broad, ± lanceolate, hairy as the leaves. Pedicels (lowermost) 10-40 mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 1.3-2 mm long, lobes 2-3.5 x 1-1.3 mm, lanceolate, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.3-0.6 mm long, glistening glands as well. Corolla tube 4-6 x 3.8-5 mm in throat, broadly funnel-shaped, limb almost regular, 11-15 mm across, posticous lobes 3.3-5 x 3.1-4.7 mm, anticous lobe 3-6 x 3-5.5 mm, all suborbicular, mauve to bright purple-pink, an occasional white sport, tube yellow/orange, glandular pubescent outside, hairs up to c. 0.5 mm long, glistening glands as well, clavate hairs inside all round throat. Stamens 4, all exserted, anthers 1.2-2.5 mm long, posticous filaments 2-3 mm long, anticous ones 3-4 mm. Stigma 1.5-3 mm long, exserted. Style 2.2-4 mm long, clad in sessile glistening glands, glandular hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long occasionally present as well. Ovary 1.5-2 x 1-1.25 mm, with glistening glands on upper part and down sutures. Capsules 4-6 x 3-5 mm, glistening glands persistent. Seeds c. 0.6-0.8 x 0.3-0.4 mm, pallid. Flower in late November or December, peaking between January and March, and tailing off in May.
