Characteristics

Suffrutex up to c. 750 mm tall, spindly or bushy, branches terete, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.3-1 mm long, brachyblasts present, leafy at least on the upper parts. Leaves opposite or sometimes becoming alternate upwards, largest primary leaves 30-40 x 14.3 mm, linear to narrowly elliptic, obtuse, base slightly narrowed then abruptly expanded and clasping, connate or not, margins usually strongly revolute, sometimes weakly so, both surfaces hairy as stems. Flowers solitary in the axils of the leaves forming long (often 150-300 mm) narrow panicles. Bracts usually wanting, occasionally present in specimens from Namaqualand and then up to c. 2.5 mm long. Pedicels (lowermost) 2-9 mm long. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 0.7-1 mm long, posticous lobes 1.8-2.6 x 0.3-0.8 mm, anticous lobes slightly broader, glandular-pubescent with some hairs up to 0.25-0.4 mm long. Corolla tube 6.5-9.5 x 34 mm in throat, funnel-shaped, limb nearly regular, 8-11 mm across, posticous lobes 24 x 2-3.1 mm, anticous lobes 2.54 x 2.5-3.2 mm, all elliptic-oblong, shades of pink or mauve, throat yellow/orange, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.1-0.3 mm long, inside bearded with 5 longitudinal bands of clavate hairs. Stamens 4, anthers 0.8-1.4 mm long, anticous pair exserted, filaments 2-2.8 mm long, posticous pair in throat, filaments 1.4-1.8 mm long. Stigma 1.3-3 mm long, exserted. Style 5.5-8 mm. Ovary 1-1.5 x 0.6-lmm. Capsules c. 3 x 2 mm. Seeds c. 0.8 x 0.4 mm, pallid. Flowering seems to occur chiefly between May and September, but the specimens from Namaqualand were collected in December and January.
