Characteristics

Perennial herb but will flower when young and then looks annual, loosely branched from the base and above, stems up to c. 200-600 mm long, up to 5 mm in diam. at base, trailing, glandular-pubescent, hairs c. 0.1-1.2 mm long, leafy. Leaves opposite but often alternate upwards, largest blades c. 15-30 x 10-25 mm, ovate abruptly contracted into a petiolar part c. 5-18 mm long (roughly as long as blade), apex acute to obtuse, margins with 3-5 pairs of coarse teeth or lobes themselves sometimes sparingly toothed, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs as on stems. Flowers solitary in axils of upper leaves, in well-grown plants forming very long (c. 450 mm) inflorescences. Pedicels (longest) c. 10-25 mm. Calyx bilabiate, tube at anthesis 1-2.5 mm long, about doubling in length in fruit, posticous lobes 3-5 x 1-2 mm, anticous lobes slightly broader, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-2 mm long. Corolla tube 8-14.5 x 4-5 mm in throat, funnel-shaped, limb nearly regular, 8-14 mm across, posticous lobes 3-4.5 x 2-3 mm, anticous lobe 3-6.5 x 24.5 mm, all elliptic, usually white, one record 'purple', tube yellow/orange, sparsely glandular-puberulous outside, hairs 0.2-0.3 mm long, scattered glistening glands as well, lightly bearded with clavate hairs inside. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, filaments 3-5 mm long, posticous pair in throat, filaments c. 2 mm long, anthers 1-1.3 mm long. Stigma c. 0.2-0.5 mm long, shortly bifid, exserted. Style 8-12.5 mm long. Ovary 1.5-2.5 x 0.8-1.5 mm, a few glistening glands on sutures and sometimes on base of style. Capsules 3.5-6.5 x 2.5-3 mm. Seeds 0.5-0.75 x 0.3-0.5 mm, pallid. Flowering has been recorded in most months.
