Characteristics

Twiggy shrublet c. 200-450 mm tall, main branches up to c. 6 mm diam., all parts glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.25 mm long, leafy. Leaves opposite, largest blades 4-20 x 4-20 mm, suborbicular or broadly rhomboid, abruptly contracted to a petiolar part 2-10 mm long (roughly half as long as blade), apex rounded to subacute, margins usually serrulate, occasionally subentire or few-toothed, sometimes slightly revolute, both surfaces glandular-puberulous (hairs up to 0.1-0.25 mm), twice recorded as glaucous. Flowers solitary in axils of uppermost leaves, panicled. Pedicels (lowermost) 2-10 mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.5-1 mm long, lobes 1.8-3.5 x 0.5-1 mm, glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.25 mm long. Corolla tube 4-6.5 x 3-5 mm in throat, broadly funnel-shaped, limb almost regular, 8-10 mm across, posticous lobes 2.5-3.5 x 2.5-3.5 mm, anticous lobe 3-4 x 2.6-3.5 mm, all oblong-orbicular, dark mauve or rosy-mauve, tube yellow or orange, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.2 mm long, either glabrous inside or occasionally with 1-3 weak longitudinal bands of clavate hairs. Stamens 4, all exserted, anthers 1.2-1.5 mm long, posticous filaments 2-3.2 mm long, anticous ones 3-4.5 mm. Stigma 1.3-3.5 mm long, exserted. Style 4-5.5 mm. Ovary 1.3-1.8 x 0.8-1 mm, a few glistening glands on sutures. Capsules 3-4.5 x 2-2.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.7 x 0.3 mm, amber-coloured.
