Characteristics

Perennial herb soon forming a well-branched shrublet up to 600 mm tall, base eventually woody and gnarled, branches erect, decumbent or somewhat spreading, narrowly winged or ridged, glandular-puberulous throughout including pedicels, lower parts sometimes glabrescent, few to many coarse patent glandular hairs also present, up to 1 mm long, rather broad-based, the basal part sometimes forming ± scabrid projections, or these entirely wanting, leafy throughout, brachyblasts present. Leaves opposite or sometimes ternate, largest primary leaves 7-35 x 0.8-5(-7) mm, axillary leaves smaller, all linear to narrowly elliptic, apex ± obtuse, base narrowed then abruptly expanded and decurrent in a narrow wing or ridge, margins plane to strongly revolute, entire to denticulate, hairy as the stems. Flowers often opposite, sometimes subopposite or alternate, in terminal racemes, sometimes branching into narrow panicles, very rarely some of the lowermost flowers in 3-flowered cymules. Bracts (lowermost) c. 3-12 x 0.8-2 mm, linear to narrowly lanceolate, or occasionally the lowermost flowers in the axils of the uppermost leaves c. 3-17 x 0.8-3 mm (vegetative bud visible in axil). Pedicels (lowermost) 5-10(-15) mm long. Calyx bilabiate, tube (1-)1.5-2 mm long, posticous lobes (2.5-)3-4.8 x 0.5-1 mm, anticous lobes somewhat broader, glandular-puberulous, few to many coarser hairs also present, 0.2-0.6 mm long. Corolla tube 9.5-19 x 2.5-4 mm in throat, narrowly funnel-shaped, limb almost regular, c. 9-15 mm across, posticous lobes 2.7-6 x 2-3.5 mm, anticous lobes 3-6 x 2-4 mm, all oblong-elliptic, usually shades of pink, mauve and purple, occasionally white, tube yellow or orange, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.25 mm long, no glistening glands, either glabrous within or weakly, rarely strongly, developed longitudinal bands of clavate hairs. Stamens 4, anthers 1-1.4 mm long, posticous filaments 1-2 mm long, anthers in mouth, anticous filaments 1.8-3 mm long, anthers exserted. Stigma 1.5-4 mm long, exserted. Style 7-14.5 mm long. Ovary 1.5-2 x 0.8-1.2 mm. Capsule c. 5-7.5 x 2.2-3 mm. Seeds c. 0.7-0.8 x 0.3 mm, pallid. They flower chiefly between June and October, sometimes as early as April or May.
