Characteristics

Leaf blades 2–15 × 1.5–4 cm, elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, acutely acuminate and mucronulate at the apex, rounded to cuneate at the base, thinly coriaceous, sparingly sericeous on both surfaces, later glabrescent above, dark green and shiny above, paler beneath; lateral nerves in 7–11 pairs, tertiary nerves laxly reticulate.

Female flowers: pedicels 1–2 mm long, lengthening slightly in fruit; sepals slightly larger than those of the male flowers, otherwise resembling them; disk c. 1 mm in diameter; ovary 2–3 mm in diameter, densely setiferous; styles c. 2 mm long, bifid, pubescent without, stigmas fimbriate, black.
Male flowers: pedicels 1 mm long; sepals 4(6), 1.5–2 × 1–1.5 mm, suborbicular, unequal, rounded, appressed-pubescent, creamy-white; disk glands 6, unequal, ellipsoid; staminal column 1.5 mm high, stamens 8–10, filaments 1.5–2 mm long, pubescent, anthers minute; pistillode 0.5 mm long.
Fruit 7–10 × 6–7 mm, tuberculate, setiferous, reddish when fresh, brown when dry; endocarp c. 0.5 mm thick.
A straggling or scandent shrub, or weak-stemmed small tree up to c. 4.5 m high.
Seeds 4 × 3 mm, smooth, shiny, black; caruncle bright red or orange.
Stipules 2–7 mm long, elliptic-lanceolate, acute, sericeous.
Petioles 3–5 mm long, sericeous-pubescent.
