Species

Angiosperms > Apiales > Pittosporaceae > Cheiranthera

Characteristics

Erect shrub, very twiggy, rhizomatous, to 50 cm high, stems smooth with some persisting hairs, eventually glabrescent. Seedling leaves apically tri-lobed, persisting. Adult leaves mainly clustering, sessile, stem clasping, linear, 23–40 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, margin incurved, often with vestigial lobing, apex mucronate; hairs not erect and persisting.  Inflorescences few-flowered corymbs, flower peduncles 21–46 mm long, nodding; flowers initially actinomorphic with parts regularly placed around the pistil, becoming zygomorphic or irregular as the anthers twist to face petal break. Sepals narrow-elliptic, 3.5–5.5 mm long. Petals obovate, 17–22 mm long, 8–11 mm wide, cuspidate, mostly deep blue on the inner surface, paler on the outer surface, darkening with age. Stamens free, grouped facing petal break; filaments 3–4 mm long, thin, wider at the base, deep purple blue; anthers obloid, 4–7 mm long, free, dehiscing through distinctive apical pores, basal lobing acute, golden yellow; pollen yellow. Pistil without basal nectary or disc, stipitate; ovary to 5 mm long, bilocular, glabrous, green-purple; style to 4 mm long; stigma slightly lobed.Fruit a loculicidally and septicidally dehiscent capsule with 2, rarely 3, loculi, 22–26 mm long, cylindrical, initially purple-green, becoming brittle and brown on maturity. Seeds numerous, c. 2 mm wide, ridged, globose, not arillate.
