Characteristics

Plants often clumped, 25–50 cm. high.. Rhizome horizontal, moniliform, bearing fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots extensive, spongy, without tubers.. Leaves rosulate, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, firmly membranous, glabrous, 20–50 cm. long, 1.5–3(–5) cm. wide; cataphylls and leaves with red-cilate margins and sometimes also veins.. Peduncle terete, shorter than the leaves, glabrous to pubescent.. Inflorescence a moderately dense, subspicate raceme, unbranched or with a single basal branch, 7–20 cm. long; rhachis subterete, angled, scabrid to shortly pubescent; floral bracts lanceolate, softly awned, red-ciliate on the margins, lower ones up to 15 mm. long.. Pedicels articulated at the apex, up to 3 mm. long in fruit, solitary at the nodes.. Perianth white, ± bell-shaped and slightly constricted above the ovary; tepals connate, 5–7 mm. long, narrow, 1-veined, cucullate, papillate on the inside just above the ovary.. Stamens exserted; filaments fusiform, dilated in upper part, 4–6.5 mm. long; anthers versatile, 1.5–3 mm. long, twisted after anthesis.. Style exserted, declinate.. Capsule triquetrous, deeply lobed, emarginate, 2–4 mm. long, 3–5.5 mm. wide.. Seeds saucer-shaped, 3 mm. in diameter.
