Characteristics

Plants growing single or clumped, variable, 10–40 cm. high, drying blackish.. Rhizome small, with fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots ± spongy, with elongate tubers near the tips.. Leaves sometimes slightly hysteranthous, rosulate, olive-green above, paler beneath, lanceolate, moderately firm, clasping the peduncle; lamina glabrous, 10–30 cm. long, ± canaliculate, 1.5–4(–7) cm. wide, margins hyaline and ciliate; cataphylls orange to purplish or with coloured veins, with ciliate and often crisped margins.. Peduncle leafless, terete, glabrous, 5–40 cm. long.. Inflorescence usually unbranched, occasionally with a few short branches at the base, 8–15 cm. long; rhachis papillate to pubescent; floral bracts linear to lanceolate, lower ones up to 25 mm. long, often shortly ciliate and hairy.. Pedicels articulated near to distinctly above the middle, 3–10 mm. long, 2–4-nate at the lower nodes.. Perianth whitish tinged greenish cream to brownish, slightly urceolate near the base; tepals ± reflexed, 6–8 mm. long, 1.5–2.5 mm. wide, 3–5-veined, scabrid on margins and veins.. Stamens shorter than the perianth; filaments fusiform, scabrid to papillose, 3–5 mm. long, longer than the 1.5–2 mm. long, orange-yellow anthers.. Style straight, as long as the stamens.. Capsule obovoid, emarginate, triquetrous, 6–10 mm. long, usually longer than broad, with persistent perianth-remnants at the base.. Seeds disc-shaped, 2.5–4 mm. in diameter.
