Characteristics

Plants small, tufted, up to 20 cm. high.. Rhizome short, moniliform, horizontal, bearing fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots fibrous, bearing distinct tubers, sometimes close to the rhizome, with patterned surface towards the tips.. Leaves rosulate, few, linear-lanceolate, clasping below, minutely pubescent to papillate, particularly on the veins, 6–12 cm. long, 4–6 mm. wide, the bases and cataphylls with papillate to ciliate margins; cataphylls distally patent, base whitish to orange with green veins.. Peduncle stiffly erect, never arcuate, terete, sometimes glabrous below, papillate to pubescent above, 7–10 cm. long.. Inflorescence simple, open, exserted above the leaves, 6–20 cm. long; rhachis pubescent.. Pedicels articulated near the middle, short, up to ± 4 mm. long in fruit, usually solitary at the nodes.. Perianth white, papillose; tepals 3–5(–8) mm. long, 2 mm. wide, 3-veined.. Stamens as long asthe perianth; filaments filiform, scabrid, ± 3 mm. long, longer than the 1 mm. long versatile anthers.. Style as long as the stamens.. Capsule triquetrous, emarginate, ± 3 mm. long, 4–5 mm. wide.. Seeds saucer-shaped, 1.5–2 mm. in diameter.
