Characteristics

Plants variable, often gregarious, 25–60 cm. high.. Rhizome horizontal, moniliform, patterned by concentric scars, often bearing fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots wiry, bearing tubers.. Leaves distichous, firm, linear, the bases often red-brownish to deep green and with a white band at the top especially in young plants, 25–75 cm. long, 0.6–3 cm. wide, glabrous, the margins minutely scabrid to ciliate.. Peduncle sometimes arcuate below, terete, glabrous, 20–40 cm. long, often with 1–3 small bracts below the inflorescence, sometimes bronze-coloured in upper part.. Inflorescence a lax panicle, up to 25 cm. long; rhachis angled, glabrous, scabrid, or shortly ciliate on the angles; floral bracts glabrous.. Pedicels articulated below the middle, pinkish brown, up to 5 mm. long in fruit, 2-nate at lower nodes.. Perianth greenish white; tepals 4–5 mm. long, scabrid, 3–5-veined, sometimes with a brownish stripe outside.. Stamens as long as the perianth; anthers shorter than the minutely papillate filaments, 1.5 mm. long.. Style filiform, exserted.. Capsule subglobose, trigonous, smooth, 3–7 mm. long, 5–9 mm. wide.. Seeds disc-shaped, up to 3.5 mm. in diameter.
