Characteristics

Plants 60–80 cm. high.. Rhizome horizontal, moniliform; roots thick, tough, bearing tubers at the tips.. Leaves distichous, broadly linear to linear-lanceolate, usually glabrous, often with a dark green to brownish-green band at the base, clasping, 20–30 cm. long, up to 12 mm. wide.. Peduncle subterete, glabrous, occasionally with 1–2 sterile bracts close to the inflorescence.. Inflorescence lax, ascending; racemes 3–10, each subtended by a bract; rhachis angled, glabrous, sometimes sparsely papillate; floral bracts ovate, small, apiculate.. Pedicels articulated below the middle, densely papillate-pubescent, up to 10 mm. long in fruit, 2–4-nate at the lower nodes.. Perianth greenish white, papillate-hairy, ± 5 mm. long; tepals 3-veined.. Stamens as long as the perianth; filaments filiform, glabrous, much longer than the anthers.. Style exserted, slightly declinate.. Capsule globose, trigonous, ± 5 mm. long, 5 mm. wide.. Seeds disc-shaped, ± 2.5 mm. in diameter.
