Characteristics

Plants 25–70 cm. high.. Rhizome vertical, bearing fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots spongy, thick, without tubers.. Rosette-leaves reduced to a few glabrous cataphylls.. Peduncle terete, glabrous, with large lanceolate clasping glabrous leaves, up to 15 cm. long and ± 1 cm. wide all along.. Inflorescence paniculate, lax; rhachis terete, glabrous; floral bracts narrowly lanceolate.. Pedicels articulated above the middle, 5–15 mm. long in fruit, 2–4-nate at the lower nodes.. Perianth greenish, ± 6.5 mm. long; tepals reflexed when dry, 3-veined.. Stamens 5–6 mm. long; filaments terete, much longer than the anthers.. Ovary sessile; style ± 6 mm. long.. Capsule shallowly lobed, rounded in cross-section.. Seeds ± irregularly folded, 1.5 mm. in diameter.. Fig. 3.
