Characteristics

Plants 30–70 cm. high.. Rhizome horizontal, narrow, moniliform, bearing fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots fibrous, with tubers usually on lateral branches.. Leaves distichous or nearly so, grass-like, ciliate to pubescent, linear, usually without coloured banding at the base, sheathing the lower peduncle, 20–50 cm. long, 2–6 mm. wide.. Peduncle terete, ± pubescent, rarely glabrous, up to 45 cm. long.. Inflorescence a lax panicle; rhachis terete, glabrous; floral bracts small, ovate, acuminate.. Pedicels often articulated below the middle, sometimes in upper half, up to 10 mm. long in fruit, 2-nate at the lower nodes.. Perianth yellowish green; tepals 3–4 mm. long, ± 1 mm. wide, 3–5-veined.. Stamens as long as the perianth; filaments glabrous to papillate, ± 3 mm. long; anthers versatile, ± 1 mm. long.. Capsule subglobose, triquetrous, 3–4 mm. long, 4–5.5 mm. wide.. Seeds disc-shaped, 2 mm. in diameter.
