Characteristics

Plants up to 120 cm. high.. Rhizome vertical, short, thick, bearing fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots thick (diameter up to 1 cm.) and spongy, whitish, extensive, without tubers.. Leaves often hysteranthous, rosulate, linear to narrowly lanceolate, not petiolate, glabrous, 20–45 cm. long, (0.6–)1–2.5 cm. wide; margins undulate.. Peduncle terete, glabrous, 2–6 mm. in diameter, up to 70 cm. long, with deciduous leaves all along.. Inflorescence a lax panicle, much exserted above the leaves; floral bracts lanceolate, glabrous.. Pedicels articulated below to near the middle, sometimes near the base, 7–15 mm. long, 3–6(–10)-nate at the lower nodes.. Perianth whitish, tinged or streaked white on the outside, urceolate; tepals reflexed distally, not ligulate, 6–10 mm. long, ± 2–3 mm. wide, 3-veined.. Filaments scabrid to papillose, fusiform, widest in upper half, ± 5 mm. long; anthers versatile, 1.5–2 mm. long, twisted after anthesis.. Ovary narrowing towards the base but not stipitate as in the previous species; style straight, ± 6 mm. long.. Capsule triquetrous, 5–11 mm. long, emarginate.. Seeds disc-shaped, 2–3 mm. in diameter..
