Plants 30–60 cm.. Rhizome short, bearing fibrous remnants from previous years’ leaves; roots swollen and thick throughout their length.. Leaves rosulate, broadly lanceolate, ± rounded at apex, 10–25 cm. long, 2.5–5 cm. wide, sheathing below, often with a hyaline margin; sheathing cataphylls sometimes present.. Peduncle terete, 10–25 cm., leafless, but sometimes with one sterile bract below the inflorescence.. Inflorescence a much-branched panicle; floral bracts short, lanceolate and acute, supporting stiffly patent lateral branches up to 30 mm. long.. Pedicels articulated near the apex, stiffly patent to semipatent, up to 25 mm. long, 2–3-nate at the lower nodes.. Tepals patent, 5–6 mm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide, white with a greenish dorsal stripe, 3-veined.. Stamens shorter than the tepals; filaments filform, scabrid, sometimes pinkish in upper parts, ± 3 mm. long; anthers 1.5–2 mm. long.. Style straight.. Capsule deltate in cross-section, emarginate, ± 4 mm. long, Seeds saucer-shaped, 2 mm. in diameter.
