Characteristics

Shrub to 2 m tall; young branches whitish sericeous-puberulous or densely so, indistinctly 4-angled. Leaves crisped-puberulous or sparsely so; petiole 0.4-1.7 cm long; lamina ovate to elliptic or broadly so, largest 2.5-5.5 x 1-4 cm; apex obtuse to broadly rounded or retuse; base cuneate to truncate, often slightly unequal. Inflorescences simple racemiform panicles when young, eventually becoming branched panicles up to 10 cm long; peduncle up to 2 cm long, indumentum as young branches; axis with similar indumentum; bracts 2-5 x 1-2 mm, caducous, green or tinged purple, lanceolate to narrowly triangular-ovate, acute, indumentum as young branches. Flowers single or in 3-flowered cymules towards base of inflorescence; pedicels 1-2 mm long; bracteoles 2-4 mm long, lanceolate, indumentum as bracts. Calyx 6-8(-10 in fruit) mm long, green or tinged purple, puberulent and without or with scattered (rarely dense) short orange capitate glands. Corolla puberulous, deep mauve, paler and more bluish on the outside; tube white to yellowish 7-14 mm long, straight or slightly curved, cylindrical or widening slightly upwards; lobes recurved with tips spirally recoiled, linear to oblong, subacute, 15-25 mm long, three in lower lip 2-4 mm wide, two lateral held horizontally, upper lip c. 2 mm wide, notched or not; filaments 15-20 mm long, white to pale mauve, held horizontally between lips; anthers deep mauve, turning blue-green; style glabrous. Capsule 2-3-seeded, 15-22 mm long, glabrous to minutely puberulent; seed 5-6 x 4-5 mm, sides scatteredly verrucose, rim finely spinulose.
