Characteristics

Trees or shrubs with stellate indumentum; functionally dioecious. Leaves alternate, large, palmately nerved from the base; stipules falling. Flowers functionallyunisexual in pedunculate terminal and lateral branched corymbiform cymes. Calyx campanulate, 3–5-lobed. Petals 5(–7). Stamens numerous, almost free, all fertile in male flowers, sterile in female flowers; anther loculi spreading. Ovary of (1–)2–5(–6) free carpels each with 1 pendulous ovule; styles 5–6, ± adhering with stigmas reflexed. Fruits of (1–)4(–6) follicles each splitting into 2 boat-shaped valves, tomentose. Seed subglobose, solitary, marbled; endosperm fleshy; cotyledons large and foliaceous.
