Characteristics

Fibrous-rooted perennial to 5 dm, often beginning to fl when very small; stems glandular and spreading-villous; lvs ovate to suborbicular, hairy, long-petiolate, crenate, 2.5–10 × 1.5–6 cm, the middle and upper generally deltoid or cordate at base; heads few or solitary on slender terminal and axillary peduncles, the disk 7–10 mm wide; outer invol bracts villous like the stem; rays ca 5, broad, 7–15 mm; 2n=16, 32. Woods, s. Pa. and se. O. to Fla. and Miss. Mar.–July. Ours is var. virginianum.
