Leaf sheaths open, swollen, in older plants with additional triangular cleft at base of petiole; petioles to 90 cm, white-waxy tomentose initially; blades divided into 36-45 segments, these to 50 × 1.8-2.5 cm. Inflorescences to 2 m, arching below leaves; rachillae many, 10-20 cm; flowers mostly solitary; petals purple. Fruits red, orange, or purple, obovoid to pear-shaped, to 2.5 × 2.2 cm, borne on short stalks.
